An End to Hunger is Closer Than You Think

Hunger claims some three million young lives every year, but for the first time in history, game changing solutions are within our reach. Using ready-to-use therapeutic foods, we can now treat children at home, and save lives at a scale never before imagined.
Thanks to ready-to-use therapeutic foods, we know how to fight deadly hunger. Thanks to your support, we’re one step closer to winning the fight.

Joyline and Belinta's Road to Recovery

Nancy, a young mother, makes a six-hour journey to an Action Against Hunger-supported health center in West Pokot, Kenya, with her seven-month-old twins tied to her back. Her two girls, Joyline and Belinta, are both suffering from severe acute malnutrition, and Nancy walks to the health center every week so they can receive treatment.

A community health worker measures Joyline and Belinta to make sure the treatment is working. They are getting healthier with each visit.
A community health worker weighs and measures the girls. He gives Nancy a supply of ready-to-use therapeutic foods that she can give to them at home -- RUTFs are revolutionary because they allow for home treatment. Nancy then picks up Joyline and Belinta and begins the trip back. As Nancy walks the road home, her girls are on the road to recovery.

Affordable Care for Nosheen

When Action Against Hunger’s nutrition teams were screening children in the village of Muhammad Khan in Pakistan, little Nosheen was diagnosed with acute malnutrition. She was also at greater risk for other diseases because malnutrition left her body was too weak to fight them off.

At the health center, Nosheen holds a packet of ready-to-use therapeutic food, which is specially formulated to help children like her recover from malnutrition.
Nosheen’s family couldn’t afford private medical care for her, so a community nutrition advocate encouraged them to visit an Action Against Hunger-supported health center in their area. At the health center, Nosheen received treatment with ready-to-use therapeutic food, and is now gaining weight.

Help for Kaya and Her Mother

Two-year-old Kaya was diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition. She’s not alone: in Mali, an estimated 500,000 children could suffer from malnutrition this year. But we’re working to change that. We treated Kaya with ready-to-use therapeutic food at a health center in Bamako, Mali.

At the health center, our health workers teach classes in cooking, hygiene, and other childcare essentials.
We don’t just treat malnutrition -- we also work to prevent it. So while Kaya receives treatment, her mother and other caretakers of children at the health center take classes so they can learn nutritious recipes, proper infant care practices, and other techniques to keep their children healthy.

Lifesaving Treatment for Mohammed

In Lawanti, Nigeria, families lack access to clean water, which can lead to waterborne illnesses like diarrheal disease. Mohammed, a fourteen-month-old boy, was suffering from diarrhea when his mother brought him to an Action Against Hunger-supported health center for treatment.

Diarrheal disease, which can lead to malnutrition, is a leading cause of death among children. We gave Mohammed the care he needed to recover.
Mohammed received treatment at the health center and is now healthy. Mohammed’s mother described their experience, and expressed her gratitude to Action Against Hunger’s teams for helping her son: “He was treated and started getting better and better with every visit. He’s no longer sick; he is well. I am really grateful.”

Your Support Goes Further

As fundraisers, you're committed to ending deadly hunger. So are we. That's why we make sure the money you raise goes where it's needed most. In 2013, we spent $0.92 of every donated dollar on our lifesaving programs:

So you can feel good that you're not only supporting a vital cause, but a great organization as well!
But don't just take our word for it: a number of independent watchdogs offer annual assessments of our agency’s fiscal and organizational health.

We've earned four stars from Charity Navigator for our financial transparency and efficiency for seven consecutive years. Only 2% of non-profits earn this distinction.
