When Helene was four days old, her mother developed a severe illness. Two-and-a-half months later, Helene’s mother passed away. Helene’s grandmother, Lissoaba, became her principal caregiver. Deprived of a mother to nurse newborn Helene, Lissoaba had to find a way to feed her. Not knowing what to do, her grandmother fed Helene what she thought was a good substitute for breast milk: sweet, condensed milk that she found at the local market. It gave Helene diarrhea.
Lissoaba brought her to a local health clinic where Action Against Hunger staff screened her, and immediately transferred her to a pediatric emergency unit. There, she was hospitalized for severe acute malnutrition. After Helene’s condition became more stable, she was admitted to a treatment center for further specialized inpatient care and therapeutic feeding. During Helene’s stay her grandmother received nutrition education and free meals.
Helene is now doing well. She has a great appetite and a beautiful smile. Her grandmother is very grateful for the care Helene received, and cannot thank us enough for the lifesaving treatment that your generosity made possible.
This is how your monthly gifts could help young children, families, and entire communities. Your gift of $45 a month can provide 12 children a year with lifesaving therapeutic nutrition treatment.
After two earthquakes devastated Nepal in the spring of 2015, thousands of people were left without homes or basic services. The earthquakes affected children like the ones in the photo below, from the village of Suryamati, in Nuwakot district. While their mothers attend a psychosocial support session and receive counseling from an Action Against Hunger psychologist -- both individually and as a group -- the children play in a safe space we have created. Here, they can forget their stresses after the catastrophe.
As a monthly donor, you allow us to prepare for emergencies so we can reach families faster and help them rebuild their lives.
Your gift of $25 a month can provide essential support for families who have lost everything.
In the remote town of Popokapaka, D.R. Congo, children had no choice but to drink contaminated river water—and they were getting sick because of it. Waterborne diseases like cholera put children at greater risk for malnutrition. So our teams worked with community members to install freshwater points. Now, the town’s children are safe from the waterborne diseases that lead to malnutrition.
As a monthly donor, you help us work with more communities around the world to create long-lasting solutions to hunger.
You can empower more towns like Popo. Your gift of $15 a month can help a community build and maintain a freshwater well.
When you become a monthly donor, you'll be transforming lives for the better--lives of children like Helene who require critical care; families like those affected by the earthquakes in Nepal who are in need of emergency assistance; and entire communities like Popokapaka that are working toward a brighter future.
And we'll share with you more stories just like these, so you can see how your monthly contributions continue to make a difference.
