Your Support Saves Lives
Action Against Hunger Quarterly Progress Report
Reaching People in Need Together
At Action Against Hunger, we’re well-equipped to respond to emergencies, including conflicts, natural disasters, outbreaks of disease—and the everyday emergency of childhood malnutrition. As our teams were called upon to respond to these crises in 2014, we called on supporters like you to take action. And you answered that call.
Your generosity allowed us to reach millions of vulnerable families. In 2014, you were with us on the front lines in 45 countries, helping us save lives, empower communities, and respond to crises.
Here’s a glimpse of how your support has helped us reach people in need recently:

Helping Aatif and His Father

Little Aatif was suffering from diarrhea and a fever when his father, Abdul Hameed, brought him to a local health center. There, a neighbor encouraged Abdul to take Aatif to an Action Against Hunger-supported health center in Sindh, Pakistan, where he could get the help he needed to recover.

At the health center, Aatif eats a packet of ready-to-use therapeutic food, which is specially formulated to help children like him recover from malnutrition.
While Aatif was receiving nutrition treatment at the health center, our staff showed his father how to access clean water and improve the hygiene conditions in their house so Aatif can remain healthy when he returns home after treatment. Aatif is now gaining weight, and his family’s quality of life is getting better, too.
In the last six months of 2014*, your support provided essential nutrition and health support for more than 96,400 people across Pakistan—including more than 9,650 malnourished children just like Aatif.

Bringing Clean Water to Displaced Families

Since January 2014, more than 2.1 million conflict-affected people have been displaced across Iraq—900,000 of whom have taken refuge in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), in the nation’s north. We have scaled up our programs in the region, including providing water, sanitation and hygiene solutions to displaced people.

Displaced people from northern Iraq are retrieving clean water from a water bladder that has been trucked in to their settlement.
Access to safe water and sanitation is essential to help prevent diseases in the camps and public spaces where families are taking refuge. Our teams are building showers and latrines, installing and maintaining water taps, and strengthening water networks.
Your support is helping thousands of displaced people in KRI access safe water and sanitation—including 7,000* people seeking refuge in Garmawa camp.

Assisting Families in the Philippines

In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines, leaving 14 million people in need. More than a year later, many typhoon-affected families are still struggling to regain self-sufficiency—including the Refuerzo family.

Luz Refuerzo stands at her dried fish stall, which she started with a cash grant from Action Against Hunger.
Luz Refuerzo, 55, is the sole breadwinner for her family because her husband struggles to find work and her father is paralyzed. We provided Luz with an unconditional cash grant to start a business. She now runs a dried fish stand, and with the money she earns she can support her husband, father, and young grandson.
Your support has empowered 600,000 people in the Philippines through long-term restoration programs—including 13,000 vulnerable families like the Refuerzos that have received unconditional cash grants.

Responding to the Ebola Epidemic

Since summer 2014, the largest and longest Ebola outbreak in history has swept through West Africa, claiming more lives than any previous outbreak. It has also crippled health systems, halted trade, and reduced food production, leaving millions of people in affected countries food insecure.

We distributed hundreds of handwashing kits to families in Liberia to help stop the spread of Ebola.
We are working closely with health and aid agencies in Sierra Leone and Liberia to stop the spread of Ebola. We’re educating communities about the virus, training community health workers on how to detect and refer suspected Ebola patients, and building local capacity to respond to the needs of communities.
Your support has helped us reach more than 250,000* vulnerable people in Ebola-affected countries.
