Extreme Hunger In Northeast Nigeria
People affected by Boko Haram conflict have been cut off from aid for almost two years and are in urgent need of food, water, health services.
In northeast Nigeria, conflict between the militant group Boko Haram and government forces has uprooted 2.4 million people from their homes.
The Nigerian government declared a food and nutrition emergency in Borno State in northeast Nigeria in late July. Due to recent success in reclaiming areas previously controlled by Boko Haram—humanitarian organizations are now getting limited access to displaced people in parts of Borno State for the first time in nearly two years.
URGENT NEEDS
Initial reports indicate that the needs in parts of Borno are extreme. Families have been living without adequate access to safe drinking water, food, shelter, and healthcare.
According to reports from UNICEF, an estimated 250,000 children in Borno are severely malnourished -- and the lives of 49,000 children are in immediate danger unless they receive immediate therapeutic treatment.
The United Nations has also conducted rapid screening missions in parts of Borno State: these confirmed visible malnutrition among adults and children, an extreme scarcity of food and water, very limited health facilities.
Action Against Hunger is also conducting rapid needs assessments in newly accessible area of Borno to determine the scale and severity of the crisis.
OUR TEAMS IN ACTION
Action Against Hunger has mobilized an expert rapid response team to Monguno in Borno State, where we are conducting rigorous rapid needs assessments and launching immediate emergency programs to save lives and reduce suffering.
Over the next few weeks in Monguno in Borno State, we will reach populations in need with:
- safe water
- temporary shelter kits
- hygiene kits and essential relief items
- emergency health and nutrition services to save the lives of vulnerable children
We will launch other new emergency programs in newly accessible areas of Borno, and we are expanding existing programs to reach more people in need in Yobe State, and in camps and communities around Maiduguri in Borno State – delivering emergency health and nutrition programs, essential relief supplies, clean water, and adequate sanitation to promote hygiene and prevent deadly waterborne diseases.
